Dengue fever
Backround
Dengue has been called the most important mosquito-transmitted viral disease in terms of morbidity and mortality. Dengue fever is a benign acute febrile syndrome occurring in tropical regions. In a small proportion of cases, the virus causes increased vascular permeability that leads to a bleeding diathesis or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) known as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Secondary infection by a different dengue virus serotype has been confirmed as an important risk factor for the development of DHF. In 20-30% of DHF cases, the patient develops shock, known as the dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Worldwide, children younger than 15 years comprise 90% of DHF subjects;1 however, in the Americas, DHF occurs in both adults and children.
Dengue is a homonym for the African ki denga pepo, which appeared in English literature during an 1827-28 Caribbean outbreak. The first definite clinical report of dengue is attributed to Benjamin Rush in 1789, but the viral etiology and its mode of transmission via mosquitos were not established until the early 20th century.
Pathophysiology
Dengue viral infections frequently are not apparent. Classic dengue primarily occurs in nonimmune, nonindigenous adults and children. Symptoms begin after a 5- to 10-day incubation period. DHF/DSS usually occurs during a second dengue infection in persons with preexisting actively or passively (maternally) acquired immunity to a heterologous dengue virus serotype. Illness begins abruptly with a minor stage of 2-4 days' duration followed by rapid deterioration. Increased vascular permeability, bleeding, and possible DIC may be mediated by circulating dengue antigen-antibody complexes, activation of complement, and release of vasoactive amines. In the process of immune elimination of infected cells, proteases and lymphokines may be released and activate complement coagulation cascades and vascular permeability factors.
Treatment
Prehospital Care
Initiate supportive therapy
Intravenous (IV) crystalloids, as needed to keep systolic blood pressure above 90 mm Hg
O2, empirically
Emergency Department Care
Supportive therapy
IV access, O2, and monitoring are helpful.
IV crystalloids may be necessary for hypotension; central line may be needed.
Correct electrolyte abnormalities and acidemia.
Implement therapy for DIC if indicated.
Corticosteroids are not helpful.
No antiviral therapy is available.
Consultations
Infectious disease
Travel clinic, if available
Medication
No specific medications are indicated for direct treatment of the dengue virus infection.

Teka, to go back to the religious theme of this forum, sino ba ang nag-create sa mga pesteng lamok na ito?

Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere,

Thank you, Harballah.

Re: Dengue fever
Mosquito trap (Dengue prevention)
It's just a mix of water, brown sugar and yeast.
1. Cut a plastic bottle in half, keep both parts. Can be Coca Cola / Pepsi bottle.
2. Take the lower portion of the bottle. Dissolve the brown sugar in hot water. Let it cool down to ~70 degF.
3. Add the yeast. Carbon dioxide will form (This will attract the mosquitos)
4. Cover the bottle with a dark wrap and place the top portion upside down like a funnel. Place it in a corner in your house.
5. In 2 weeks you will be surprised by the number of mosquitos killed.

Why test? What is he testing? I think he should know by now who fanatically worships him or not.
This is the lamest excuse I hear from all religions. Deaths of innocents to test the faithful. Such a lame god. No offense.

I cannot make sense of enduring deaths of innocents for glad tidings, heaven, paradise, heavenly reward in the afterlife, in the furure, in the second coming, after judgment day, after the apocalypse, whatever. What matters to me is what is present and what I have right now. I don't need paradise in the future. I want paradise at present and to me...seeing children live a full life is paradise. Seeing them die needlessly caused by someone who created disease or pest is atrocious and unforgivable. it's because I'm human and every minute counts, every moment cherished. I want to live seeing children grow happy lives..seeing them smile and play. Their deaths does not justify eternal happiness in the future. Would I see these children again in the afterlife with clocks turned back? No. It's obvious faith is what I lack. Because it doesn;t make any sense.
What i want to see is for humans to progress and discover solutions to our current problems(diesease) and make this world a better place to live in. I dont need eternal happiness when I can live a happy life on earth. It's enough.
But of course that's just me.

Re: Dengue fever
Your thinking makes perfect sense, Vril, considering that you are an atheist. But what I could not understand are the believers. It made me suspect that Christians don't fully believe in heaven.
Look, they worry about Dengue! If they get Dengue and they die, then they would see Jesus sooner. Why aren't they excited about that?
Their child sick with Dengue? For us, atheist, we should react with an appropriate and urgent medical response. But for Christians, a sick child is a sure bet that she goes to heaven. So, excitement should be the reaction.
But the reason why Christians are not reacting as such because deep down they doubt if there is really God and heaven. They praise each other for the other's faith because their faith is really problematic.

Hi Ateo,
Exactly. I have the same thoughts about the religious. Nakakasira ng bait di ba. If we think about it, some religious beliefs are fighting against our very basic nature to survive and live an interesting life.
I don't think they really doubt god. God belief/Afterlife is somehow hardwired in our brains. This part of the brain is probably in conflict with another part of our brain that tells us to live. I dunno. i can;t really explain. Nakakabaliw isipin..^_^.

Re: Dengue fever
As I kept on advising the many pastors in BARM, the fastest way to see Jesus is to preach loudly in Basilan. A couple of weeks proclaiming Jesus there might earn one the martyrdom that ensures heaven and prompt reunion with Jesus.
Nobody has taken up my advice just yet.
Btw, I agree with you. Faith may be hardwired in our brain and so is need to live -- and the two gets into conflict when dying would have been the correct response to faith.

Maybe the rewards aren't inviting as the rewards of those suicide bombers.
