Re: How Burial started?
Kuya Harby,
Could you shed light on us "kung ano dapat ang gagawin" just in case my ganitong insidente yung iba po nating mga OFW?
thanks.

Re: How Burial started?
Interesting and relevant question, Esther. Islamic practice requires that the dead must be buried before sundown. The practice could be due to absence of preservation techniques during the time of Mohammad, although it has since become part of the Muslim practice.
What is the impact of this to our brother Muslim Pinoys in Saudi? If something happens to one of them, pwede pa bang i-uwi?

Ateo, It's a sunnah to buried the dead person before sunset or not excess than 24 hours.

Re: How Burial started?
Servius, commenting on Virgil's Æneid, observes that "the wise Egyptians took care to embalm their bodies, and deposit them in catacombs, in order that the soul might be preserved for a long time in connection with the body, and might not soon be alienated; while the Romans, with an opposite design,
committed the remains of their dead to the funeral pile, intending that the vital spark might immediately be restored to the general element, or return to its pristine nature." (From Prichard's An Analysis of the
Egyptian Mythology.)
So literally did the early Christians interpret their Scriptures that they preserved the bodies of their dead by pickling them in salt water, so that on the day of resurrection the spirit of the dead might reenter a complete and perfectly preserved body. Believing that the incisions necessary to the embalming process and the removal of the internal organs would prevent the return of the spirit to its body, the Christians buried their dead without resorting to the more elaborate mummification methods employed by the Egyptian morticians.

Cool! But I think the thinkers, movers and shakers of the atheist world should come up with appropriate and cool ceremonies and rituals of saying goodbye. The religious rites are pretty established and quite okay, but I don't want to go through that. Mine should be less ritualistic, less sad, more fun and more celebratory. It should be a celebration of life rather than an observance of death.

Forgive me Miss Terry for commenting on this, but this is really what p*sses me off with religions. As you described, early Christians pickled their dead in salt and were afraid to incise the body because they wanted to preserve the spirit within the body in anticipation of the coming of Christ. Today, we don't mind incising the body in our current practice of embalming. So the difference shows that there is no guidance from any all-knowing Being, we are just following what we think is correct. The ancients think one way and we think another way, God is nowhere to give guidance on what is the correct way. The ancients were so sure about their beliefs about burial, but now we simply ignore those beliefs as wrong. Clearly, there is no consistent guidance. Things like this make me believe that there is really no omniscient God and that we are all just guessing and concocting everything as we go along.

At syempre, demographic trend shows that soon Allah will be more popular than Jesus. Thirty years from now, Jesus, or more correctly called as Isa, will be nothing but a minor prophet.
