College students urged: Trade Bible for Playboy

'Religious texts are so appalling, you are better off having porn'

In the lobby of the University of Texas at San Antonio's humanities building, a hand-drawn poster announces, "Free porn: Just trade in your holy books (Bible, Koran, Vedas) for porn."A student group at the university called The Atheist Agenda isreviving its Bibles-for-porn program, called "Smut for Smut," for threedays beginning March 1, according to a report from San Antonio'sKENS-TV."The idea is that religious texts are so appalling," saidAtheist Agenda group member Brian Talker in a 2006 interview with UTSAstudent publication The Independent. "They are so full of genocide,misogyny and ludicrous ideas that far overshadow any banal common-senseplatitudes like loving thy neighbor, that you are better off havingporn, which isn't nearly as smutty."A current member of the group told KENS the program is also meant as a slap against religious leaders and the "hypocrisy" of their condemnations of pornography."They've been going and rallying against pornography for thelongest time," the unidentified student said, "and the disgusting,depraved acts that are within the Bible, Koran and Vedas completelyoutnumber any [faults] of any pornographic image."

Other students, however, have expressed outrage."As a Christian myself, I just take offense to it," one student told the TV station."Did they really do that?" asked another. "It kinda made me want to cry, it really did."

I always thought that the Bible is more smutty anyway. There was this old guy Noah. He got drunk one day. His grandson - young and hot Canaan - raped him. Must be very painful because he got so angry. This old man had a nephew Lot who was also raped by his daughters. These are the same daughters that he offered to be raped by a raving crowd.

A descendant, Abraham, went around offering his wife to any king, just to save his life. His wife is his cousin too. Much later, a general called Joshua ordered that defeated city residents should all be killed - children included - except the captive virgins who, while still traumatized by the massacre, should be married to ( raped by) the winning Israelites.

I can go on and on, but nasusuka ako eh. Regular porn is much more tasteful in comparison. So, yes, the smut-for-smut organizers have a point.

The teachings of Christ fulfill and extend the teachings of the Old Testament, but His teachings do not contradict those teachings. Much of the violence in the Old Testament is part of an historical narrative about Israel, including sins that led to violence. The fact that such events are described does not imply that God approves of each and every act by every sinner in the narrative.
